Does Physiotherapy Hurt?
Health and fitness has many myths associated with it. These myths can be harmless, but others stop people from getting the help they need or taking action that could improve their lives. One of the areas that is known for having multiple myths is physiotherapy. One of the most common myths that needs busting is that physiotherapy hurts. Today we’re going to provide you answers for this myth and more!
Myth 1 – Physiotherapy is Painful
The aim of physiotherapy is to relieve you from the pain that you are experiencing. That pain could be caused by your day to day activities, your posture, an accident or for many different reasons. It is important to remember that the physiotherapist will provide you with a one-off treatment, or a course of treatments, that will improve your quality of life. Some people will experience some pain during sessions, normally experienced when testing flexibility and mobility. However, with the treatment and exercise that is prescribed, a pain free life can be achieved.
It’s worth remembering that not everyone visits a physiotherapist when they are experiencing any pain. Identifying a potential issue and seeking help from a physiotherapist is an excellent way of avoiding pain entirely.
Myth 2 – I Need to Be Referred to A Physiotherapist by My Doctor
Patients have the freedom to source their own physiotherapist and take their health and fitness into their own hands. It is a myth that you need to be referred by your doctor before you are seen by a physiotherapist. It’s perfectly acceptable to book an appointment by yourself. By doing so you can reduce waiting times dramatically and take pressure off the already strained medical service. An assessment will be performed to learn all about your concerns and conditions and treatment can be decided upon.
Myths Busted!
Physiotherapy doesn’t have to hurt and it doesn’t have to follow an appointment with your doctor. Whether you’ve been injured through work, or hurt in an accident, you can work towards a pain free life with the help of a physiotherapist.
